ELAG is an effective local networking organisation that maximizes the exchange of information to address the language/literacy needs of the community. It is also an advocacy group for English language and literacy provision in the City of Greater Dandenong. ELAG is a forum to address issues of concerns in the local community.
ELAG is a networking organisation that meets on a regular basis to exchange information on identified issues, problems, services and trends within the City of Greater Dandenong. It has been meeting for the past ten years and has been a very effective focal point for concerns, initiatives and activities relating to English language and literacy provision in the area. To acknowledge 10 years of cooperation, we re-affirmed our Statement of Purpose in April 1998. Our Statement of Purpose is as follows:
- to provide a forum for the exchange of information, coordinating and strategic
- planning and provision of language and literacy provision and services
- to provide an opportunity for the effective networking through the participation of
- service providers and agencies
- to lobby and advocate effectively on behalf of the community in respect to language and literacy provision
- to support relevant research eg identifying needs and examining models of delivery.
Over the past 10 years, ELAG has been an active lobbying and advocacy body. Through the successful exchange of information, we have been able to plan effectively for the needs that have been identified in the community and through English Language & Literacy Access. Our achievements are as follows:
- the establishment of ELAG, which brought together local language and literacy providers, along with funding bodies and other agencies
- the research project 'Words Indeed' (1991) which clarified needs and presented a model for an advice and referral service which was able to maximise and streamline service provision for those needing English language and/or literacy courses
- effective lobbying and the establishment of the Springvale English Language Advice Centre, now called English Language & Literacy Access, which was based on the model presented in 'Words Indeed'
- through the effective identification of needs, the ability to streamline resources and opportunities for increased language and literacy provision within the City of Greater Dandenong. This has been met by; increased funding, better targeting of student needs to maximise funding opportunities and resources
- the ability to meet the specific needs, eg the Pre-Literacy class at the Springvale Neighbourhood House
- effective networking between providers, funding bodies and other agencies
ELAG has been instrumental in facilitiating:
- the establishments of partnerships by encouraging collaborative networking thereby maximising limited resources
- the establishment of the Neighbourhood Literacy Centre.
