If You Find Someone's Pet

If you find an animal, ring Council and we can arrange to collect the animal and set about finding its owner.

The first place people usually ring when their animal is lost is the council, so the best place for the animal to be quickly returned to its owner is in the care of council. We return over 65% of animals back to their owners.  In most cases, where the animal is micro chipped or wearing a Council registration tag, we return it directly to its owner.

If no owner can be found for an animal after 8 days, we entrust it to the closest pound/shelter to try finding someone to love and look after it.

The Domestic Animals Act section 84D says, "Any person who seizes a dog or cat must, as soon as is reasonably possible, deliver it to an authorised officer of the council of the municipal district in which it is found, or to a person or body which has an agreement under section 81 with the council of the municipal district in which the dog or cat is found."

If you find a dog or cat, make sure you do not keep it unlawfully

Stray Animals

If you find a stray animal you can contact the City of Greater Dandenong to have the animal collected.  Please have the following information available so that we respond as quickly as possible.  Response times are usually within 12 hours.

Animals that are collected by a council Local Laws Officer are taken to council Pound where they will remain for 8 days.  After this time the animal will be transferred to the Lost Dogs Home, with a view to finding them a loving home.
