In March 2013, the Minister for Planning announced reforms to Victoria’s residential planning zones. The existing suite of Residential Zones (1, 2 & 3) are to be replaced by the ‘General Residential Zone’, the ‘Residential Growth Zone’ and the ‘Neighbourhood Residential Zone’. These new residential zones will give much greater clarity about the type and intensity of development that can be expected in any residential area. All Councils have from July 2013 to June 2014 to implement the new zones into their local planning schemes. The City of Greater Dandenong is well positioned to implement the new zones as they align closely with Council’s Residential Development and Neighbourhood Character Policy. The reforms also make changes to the existing Mixed Use Zone, Township Zone and the Low Density Residential Zone, but these zones are unlikely to affect the Greater Dandenong Planning Scheme.
