Statement of Commitment
In July 1995, the City of Greater Dandenong signed a Statement of Commitment acknowledging the Aboriginal people as the first people of this land.

The statement committed council to working with the community on a range of issues to increase the awareness of the wider community and to work for the elimination of racism or discrimination.

Greater Dandenong has always been and will continue to be proactive in Aboriginal issues and is proud to be seen as a leader in this field.

Indigenous Policy of Greater Dandenong Council

In late 1998, Greater Dandenong consulted with the local Aboriginal community over a three month period to develop a council Indigenous Policy.

The policy was adopted by council on 24 May 1999 and reviewed in 2002. The current policy was adopted by council in February 2003.

Recognition of past practices, acknowledgment of Traditional Owners and a commitment to work together towards the future are the key cornerstones of the policy.

As Greater Dandenong changes and develops in the future, the policy will be reviewed to reflect those changes.

Aboriginal Liaison Service
Aboriginal Liaison Services is an initiative of Council to understand and improve the relationship with the Aboriginal community through the use of consultation, inclusiveness and support. Long and short term actions will try to ensure that the aspirations and goals of the Aboriginal community are met. Strategically, the position is one of support and advocacy in order to empower the community.
