Revitalising Central Dandenong

Dandenong is the heart of Melbourne’s growing south east corridor. The State Government’s $290 million funded Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative is rejuvenating the city centre and creating a fresh new future for central Dandenong.

The Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative is being delivered by the Victorian Government, through Places Victoria (formerly VicUrban), in partnership with the City of Greater Dandenong

Urban Master Plan

In November 2007 the Premier of Victoria John Brumby MP and the Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong launched the Revitalising Central Dandenong Urban Master Plan.

The plan details the 15 - 20 year vision for the largest urban renewal project in Victoria since the Melbourne Docklands.  The plan maps a dynamic future for central Dandenong as it seeks to attract more people, jobs and businesses to the city centre.

It is estimated that the revitalisation will help to create up to 5,000 new jobs, 4,000 new homes and to leverage $1 billion in private sector development in the city centre over the next 15 to 20 years.

In 2011, Council together with consultants Sinatra Murphy P/L, consulted with key stakeholders and invited ideas and input into the streetscape enhancement. The findings of the consultation have been developed into four design elements.

Design team Hassel, was appointed to develop a new streetscape concept for Thomas Street.  It is anticipated that a detailed concept will be finalised by December 2012, to enable construction to commence in 2013.
