An Aboriginal Moomba: Out of the Dark

By the Public Records Office of Victoria (PROV)
4 July – 10 August

This exhibition features high quality reproductions of photographs held in the collection of the Public Record’s Office of Victoria and images reproduced from the personal scrapbook of political activist and film-maker Bill Onus. They were taken at the all Indigenous theatrical display, An Aboriginal Moomba, which was held at the Princess Theatre, Melbourne in 1951.

The performance was developed in response to the absence of any Indigenous Australian content for the celebrations of the Centenary of Victoria and the fiftieth anniversary of Federation in Australia. The performance was enthusiastically received by audiences and highly acclaimed by the critics.

An Aboriginal Moomba: 'Out of the Dark' is based on a 2008 exhibition entitled Making a Show of It, Indigenous Entertainers and Entrepreneurs in 1950s Melbourne which was developed by City Gallery, Melbourne in partnership with the Public Records Office of Victoria.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that this exhibition contains images of deceased Indigenous people.

Celebrating the Natural Form

By Carol Mercer, Janet Wilson and Kaye Webb
15 August – 14 September

This exhibition combines the work of three pastel artists who draw together, have a long standing friendship and a shared response to the world. Although this instills a commonality in the themes of the work, the individual paintings are varied and deeply creative.

The paintings include studies of natural form, landscapes, seascapes and life drawing, that are either representative or semi-abstract.

Strong colour is used to evoke the feeling of the landscape. This contrasts with the delicate life drawings. Pastels form the largest body of the exhibition and are complimented by printmaking, pen and ink studies and acrylics.

In the Garden

By Jo Reitze
19 September – 19 October

These works enclose the viewer “in the garden”.  A close vantage point, with clearly recognizable plants, and architectural features help capture the essence of the specific place. Paintings are freely executed in gouache or oils with lyrical almost calligraphic mark making and gorgeous colours.

Colours are often enhanced by strong tonal contrast. As in nature, green hues unify my compositions. These artistic responses are much more than the optical or the photographic but represent a fusion of all senses.

Resilience

By Jan Delaney
24 October – 23 November

This exhibition explores the continuance of the living Australia, in the face of the adversity of nature.

After summer fires forests come to life again.  Among the black tree trunks the golden glow of the sunlight appears on burnt bark.  Tiny specks of green and red wind around trees like snakes bringing new life.

On rugged southern coastlines of sandstone rocks and clear seas abundant plant life survives on windswept cliffs.  More than simply survival, pristine salt lakes, rich red rocks and earth give a luminosity that is indicative of life.

Fancy Face

By Christine Kyriacou
28 November – 22 December

A colourful exhibition celebrating the favoured flower of many, the pansy.

Through different mediums and textiles, Christine explores this old world favourite as this beautiful little flower comes to life in the Heritage Hill gallery this Spring.
