Trading Places started with an idea – to capture the real-life stories of a cross section of Dandenong’s diverse retail traders.
By talking to business owners about how and why they established their businesses, a snapshot of Dandenong’s retail life today was created and it serves to provid a glimpse into how this has changed and developed over time.
The stories and photographs also provide a real insight into the influence of post World War II migration on Dandenong. Many of the people interviewed were from non-English speaking backgrounds and their memories of arriving in Australia and their determination to make a life here are often truly inspirational.
This project was undertaken by Library, Arts and Heritage Services, City of Greater Dandenong and made possible through funding support from the Australian Government under the Sharing Australia's Stories national heritage grants program.
