Opening and Meet the Artists: She 2018
Thursday 1 March – Thursday 29 March
Opening and Meet the Artists: Thursday 1 March, 6.30pm
Julia Burke, Talia Carroll, Yvonne Jemmeson, Madeline Nibali, Susan Pover, Bertha Putri
Six artists selected from 2017 graduating exhibitions embark on their creative journey. Featuring RMIT graduates Talia Carroll and Julia Burke, Chisholm College of TAFE graduate Yvonne Jemmeson, Madeline Nibali from the Victoria College of the Arts graduating class, and Monash School of Art and Design graduates Susan Pover and Bertha Putri.
Julia Burke’s videos examine the way that sunlight and time change our perception of an object. Yvonne Jemmeson’s prints, collage and sculpture are interested in the relationship between two dimensional and three dimensional space. Talia Carroll’s sensual photographs come alive with pinholes that pierce the flesh. Susan Pover’s sculptures form a sort of anti-prosthesis that hinder rather than assist the movement of the wearer. Bertha Putri’s intricate, labour intensive large scale drawings combine Indonesian batik and Dutch-inspired motifs. Madeline Nibali’s series of painted family portraits are a set of recollections that could be based on false memories.
Opening night event to be launched by special guest, Kate Rohde.
Opening times: Tuesday to Friday, 11am–5pm and Saturday, 11am–3pm during exhibitions and events (closed public holidays)
Location: Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre, Gallery One and Two, Corner of Walker and Robinson streets, Dandenong
