Encourage a love of reading at your local library
08 February 2017
The Dandenong and Springvale libraries are participating in the 1000 Books Before School program in 2017.
The state-wide program aimed at children from birth to school age is designed to get children ready for school.
Research shows that sharing stories with babies and young children gives them a head start that will not only prepare them for school with better literacy skills but also give them a lifelong love of reading.
The aim of the 1000 Books Before School program is to read 1000 books to your child before they start school.
The same book can be read multiple times and participating in library storytime sessions count too.
Greater Dandenong Mayor Councillor Jim Memeti said the only pre-requisite for being part of the program was to be a library member.
“Participating in this exciting and rewarding program is free and registration can be done in person at either the Springvale or Dandenong libraries,” he said.
“I am looking forward to seeing lots of pre-schoolers at our weekly library storytime sessions this year and to welcoming some new library members as well.”
Each child who registers will receive a free reading kit to get started and receive rewards at various points on their journey to 1000 books.
