Celebrating International Day of Older Persons on Sunday 1 October
26 September 2017
International Day of Older Persons is on Sunday 1 October 2017 and it's a day where Council recognises the positive contribution older people make to our community.
In Greater Dandenong we have more than 23,000 residents over the age of 65, and Council is committed to supporting older people to participate in community life.
The theme of the International Day of Older Persons for 2017 is “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society.”
The theme of the 2017 International Day of Older Persons is about enabling and expanding the contributions of older people in their families, communities and societies at large. It focuses on the pathways that support full and effective participation in old age, in accordance with old persons’ basic rights, needs and preferences.
Council is focused on ensuring that older people are able to maintain their links with their neighbourhoods and families, and have the opportunity to use their skills and knowledge to benefit the community. The upcoming Seniors Week Festival is one part of this commitment.
Further celebrations will take place over the next week, during the Seniors Week Festival.
This year’s festival delivers a wide range of events and activities – from great music, cultural tours, exhibitions, talks, displays and much more.
