Open House Melbourne
09 July 2018
Take a peek behind closed doors when Open House Melbourne returns to Dandenong this month.
For the second year in a row, Greater Dandenong will take part in the iconic Open House weekend, with four local sites inviting visitors to explore their hidden secrets.
Tour the Dandenong Town Hall, which is now the Drum Theatre. Built in 1890 the Town Hall was redeveloped into the 521 seat Drum Theatre in 2006. See backstage and hear interesting stories about a building that was the hub of life in Dandenong for over a century.
Visit the Heritage Hill precinct, including Benga House and Laurel Lodge, then head next door to St James Anglican Church. Built in 1964 the church is the oldest un-modified building in Dandenong and continues to welcome congregations to services each week.
Tours of Harmony Square and Dandenong Library will also uncover some features you may not have noticed. Completed and open in 2014 the municipal building and modern open plaza reference the indigenous landscape, marrying our past with our present.
Tours will happen on Saturday 28 July and Sunday 29 July. The Drum is only open on Sunday 29 July, from 10am-4pm, with a special lecture and backstage tour at 11am.
