Volunteer Week 20-26 May 2019

21 May 2019

This week Council celebrates the amazing volunteers who give up their time regularly to help out in the City of Greater Dandenong.

National Volunteer Week (20-26 May) is an opportunity to celebrate the 6 million Australians who give generously of their time.

Council has 220 volunteers working across a range of programs, and without their valuable contribution many of our programs and services would not be able to run.

Mayor Roz Blades said volunteers were an important part of the Greater Dandenong community, and contributed to the culture, vibrancy, health and wellbeing of our city.

“This year’s Volunteer Week theme is Making a World of Difference, quite appropriate when you think about the fact that Greater Dandenong is a truly global community,” Mayor Blades said.

“We are the most culturally diverse community in Australia and this is reflected in the variety of people who volunteer with our services on a regular basis.”

While this week marks National Volunteer Week, Council recognises and truly values the contribution of volunteers all year round.

Over the past 12 months volunteers:

  • Helped deliver 22,500 meals to 398 residents via Council’s Food Services Program
  • Uploaded 3273 cultural artefacts to Council’s digital collection
  • Provided more than 350 face to face English conversations for new arrivals
  • Attended 248 face to face reading sessions with school students
  • Assisted 90 playgroup sessions for a total of 350 hours
  • Supported staff at 70 immunisation sessions
  • Carried out 170 home library deliveries
