Have your say on the draft Diversity, Access and Equity Policy

07 September 2015

Community members are invited to have their say on Council’s draft Diversity, Access and Equity Policy.

Diversity makes us all unique, and includes differences in gender, ability, health, birthplace, language, culture and faith, sexual orientation, income and education levels and others.

The policy acknowledges the diversity of backgrounds, values, beliefs and lifestyles of our residents. It also outlines the ways Council will support access and equity for its all its residents, including:

  • Partnership and leadership: encouraging participation in community life, providing clear information about Council services and setting an example as an organisation which respects diversity.
  • Advocacy: advocating for services to meet the needs of diverse groups and individuals.
  • Celebration: celebrating diversity, promoting respect for all residents and rejecting discrimination.
  • Community and civic participation: extending opportunities to residents to participate in Council’s policy development and decision-making.
  • Inclusive places and spaces: developing facilities and open spaces that are welcoming and safe for people of all abilities, cultures and other circumstances.
  • Service planning and delivery: providing services that are equitable, accessible and high in quality
  • Capability: training and resources for Council staff to recognise and respond to diverse needs
  • Performance: measuring progress toward the goals of the policy
