Watch the Magic Happen at this Year's Children's Festival

12 September 2018

Create some magic of your own at the Greater Dandenong’s Children’s Festival 2018.

This two-week celebration for the young and young at heart will be held throughout the school holidays from September 22 to 7 October.

Now in its seventh year the festival offers a series of free and low cost events which include daily movie screenings with a magic or fantasy theme, craft workshops, storytelling, footy days and dance classes.

Events and activities will be held right across the entire city including at parks, community centres, arts venues and Greater Dandenong Libraries.

The headline event –Little Day Out– is back again this year and will be held at Ross Reserve on Sunday 30 September from 11am to 4pm.

This year, visitors to the Little Day Out will be transported to a magical wonderland. Highlights will include camel rides, The Animals of Magical Mountains Show, a dragon jumping castle, a gator rollercoaster, a 9D cinema and magicians.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Cr Youhorn Chea said the festival appealed to people of all ages and encouraged children to explore their creative side.

“More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the Greater Dandenong Children’s Festival throughout the two weeks,” he said.

“This festival is held during the school holidays and it is the perfect way to keep the children entertained in a fun and imaginative way.”

This year’s festival will also feature the Shorter Cuts Film Festival – a junior film festival specifically tailored towards children.

Some of the films featured have been created by local school students and will screen in Harmony Square in Dandenong on Tuesday, 25 September at 12pm.

Deckchair movies will also be screened every weekday during the school holidays from 12pm. All the movies will have a magic or fantasy theme.

The festival characters are also back again in 2018. They sum up everything the Children’s Festival aims to be – fun, creative, healthy, interesting and entertaining:

Mona Beeza
I am the creative one in the group. I love to draw and write and I create a buzz wherever I go. This year I am making wishes come true. Keep an eye out for me and my magic wand.  Dreams come true when I am flying around.

I am a born entertainer. I am the guy who knows how to make you laugh and loves to be on the stage. If there is singing and dancing I’m there. I like to stand out in the crowd so look out for my new bunny ears. They are the new black I tell you.
Bob the Reader When I am not buried in books you will find me moonlighting as a Wizard. Forget Harry Potter. I am one clever pooch and a fountain of wisdom and knowledge.

Healthy Shelby
I love fruit and vegetables and always drink at least 7 glasses of water each day. Healthy by name and healthy by nature. You’ll find me and my cauldron cooking up healthy potions with a spoonful of magic.

Puss ‘n’ Hoops
I’m a kitty who loves to play. . Give me a ball, a trampoline or a place to run and I am one happy cat. I believe magic happens on the sporting field. You’ll find me right in the heart of the action.
